Guns guns and more guns! The Accountant 2 is out in time for the long weekend and of course also on your viewing calendar must be Sinners - and this is what I look like on the telly begging you to go see it IMMEDIATELY ha!
But seriously, have you worshipped at the altar of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan yet? See Sinners in IMAX Auckland and Lower Hutt if you can!
Along with chatting Sinners with the TVNZ Breakfast crew this week we also dived into Ben Affleck’s sequel to sleeper hit The Accountant and looked ahead to next week’s release of kiwi doco Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua - Two Worlds (I’ll review this film in full next week along with sharing the joyful chat I had with Marlon at the Civic recently).
But it’s yet another long weekend so GODDAMN IT lets go to the movies yes?!
NEW RELEASE
THE ACCOUNTANT 2
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I bloody loved The Accountant. I felt like I kinda stumbled upon it and that it felt unexpectedly fresh - a great little twist on the assassin-for-hire schtick and a well executed simple storyline. This sequel? Not so much, but still a fun enough ride.
Ben Affleck of course returns as Chris the killer accountant and also back on the call-sheet is Jon Bernthal (I love this guy) as his brother Braxton. This is a far more convoluted tale of revenge set against the backdrop of human trafficking, with common-sense storytelling sacrificed at the altar of Bigger Louder Longer which was kind of a bummer for me. But for those looking for more bang for their action cinema buck it might be all good?
I feel like there’s not much else to say, hardly a hearty nourishing movie reviewing casserole I’m serving you is it! But honestly, if you fancy watching Batfleck balance the books and break some faces then you could do worse than watch this movie over the weekend.
THE CATS OF GOKOGU SHRINE
Also on release at select cinemas across the country this quiet little gem: The Cats of Gokogu Shrine from Japanese filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda. The tenth film from this documentarian and clearly one for the cat lovers (yep - crazy cat lady here). But even if you’re allergic to cats, this film is as much about the people of this town and the way all the residents - cats, fish, plants AND people - fit together.
I had the absolute pleasure of this in-depth natter with Soda on Zoom from his home in the sleepy seaside town of Ushimado (where the shrine and it’s cats are just a few steps away). He was a delight - I know you’ll love listening to him as much as I did!
Speaking of cats - I hope we’re all OK after the cataclysmic events of EP2 of The Last of Us?? I am NOT ok but what an incredible hour of television that was. I know players of the game saw it coming but I very much did NOT and it bloody well broke me.
“You stupid old man, you don’t get to rush this."
Faaaaaaaaaark.
As you know I had the epic treat of sitting down with some of The Last Of Us cast a few weeks back and while I don’t mean to dump a tonne of video content on here and following on from my Bella Ramsey IV, here’s Kaitlyn Dever talking about her ten year long relationship with the show and of course the intense experience of playing Abby. Roll on Monday for the next EP!!
On the subject of video content, I’ve been loading up all my recent chats onto my YouTube channel so feel free to subscribe to that should you so desire ;) And of course, if you haven’t yet signed up for your weekly Projector missive you know what to do: click here!
Laters for now Film Fam! Go forth and remember, destruction is a form of creation #DonnieDarko4Life

Nga Ao e Rua looks promising
Sinners, sound track wtf! Jordon was in fine form supported by a most excellent cast and casting. Seriously every role. Saul Williams broooo and I love Delroy Lindo. My lovely wahina had no idea that it was a vampire 🦇 flick so that surprise alone was worth it. I was wanting there to be a music hoedown show down but the lean towards that was enough. I enjoyed The Accountant 2 better than the first one actually. 🥳 Something about Kendrick grates me 😁
